(Houston, TX) – Texans for Lawsuit Reform PAC announced today that it is endorsing State Representative Bryan Hughes, R-Mineola, for the State Senate in District 1, currently represented by Senator Kevin Eltife, R-Tyler. Eltife announced earlier this year that he will not seek re-election. Speaking for the TLRPAC Board, Chairman Richard J. Trabulsi said:

“Rep. Hughes is a steadfast conservative and a hard-working member of the Texas House who is committed to good public policies, including lawsuit reform, which strengthens the Texas economy and creates jobs. Rep. Hughes voted in support of the landmark medical liability reforms of 2003, which included the constitutional amendment allowing a cap on non-economic damages in medical liability lawsuits. He also has voted in favor of other major TLR-backed initiatives, including the bill that ended attorney-driven lawsuits against the companies that dredge Texas’s economically vital ports, the bill that reined in the explosion of lawsuits that made the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) insolvent, and several anti-barratry bills to punish ‘ambulance chasing.’”

Rep. Hughes was first elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 2002. He currently serves on the House Appropriations and Juvenile Justice & Family Issues Committees. He graduated from the University of Texas at Tyler and Baylor Law School. Upon graduation he was selected to serve as briefing attorney for United States District Judge William M. Steger. He established a private law practice in 1997 in his hometown of Mineola where he represents working families and small businesses.

Senate District 1 includes Bowie, Camp, Cass, Franklin, Gregg, Harrison, Lamar, Marion, Morris, Panola, Red River, Rusk, Smith, Titus, Upshur and Wood counties.

TLRPAC is the political arm of Texans for Lawsuit Reform, the state’s largest civil justice reform organization. TLR is a bipartisan, volunteer-led coalition with more than 18,000 supporters residing in 818 Texas communities and representing 1,266 different businesses, professions and trades.
