Liza Rodriguez (Democrat Candidate)
Liza Rodriguez is an attorney in private practice focused on criminal defense. She is former presiding judge of Bexar County Court at Law No. 8, former chief county court administrator for Bexar County and a former Bexar County assistant district attorney. She was a legislative analyst for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund and was a Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Public Policy Fellow.
Rodriguez received a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Texas and a law degree from the St. Mary’s University Law School. She has been licensed by the State Bar of Texas since 1997.
Rebecca Simmons (Republican Candidate)
Rebecca Simmons is an attorney and visiting judge at the district and appellate level. She is a former justice on the Fourth Court of Appeals from 2005-2012 and was judge of the 408th District Court in Bexar County from 2003-2005. She is former chair of the Judicial Committee on Information Technology, and a former adjunct professor at St. Mary’s University Law School. She served as a briefing attorney at the Texas Supreme Court.
Simmons received a bachelor’s degree from Austin College, completed post graduate study in European economic community and jurisprudence at Durham University, and received a law degree from Baylor University School of Law. She has been licensed by the State Bar of Texas since 1980.
Simmons has received the State Bar of Texas Presidential Citation, Austin College Alumni of the Year Award, and the San Antonio Young Lawyers Association Honorary Young Lawyer Award.
